I agree. Things like the shadows and contours of the plaid add so much to a drawing. He could've just made the shirt a solid color, but it was more interesting to put in those details.

In all honesty though, the plaid wasn't too tough - the shading is a layer above the colors that has black shapes for the shaded areas that was set to be to a good looking transperancy.
